The family of teacher Kathi Glavin Higgins has founded a scholarship fund in her memory, in the hopes of helping special education students or those pursuing degrees in education, including special education.
To give the fund a boost, the family will hold a scholarship dance in Higgins' honor Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. at the Billerica Lodge of Elks on Webb Brook Road .
A $10 donation is requested; proceeds benefit the Kathi Glavin Higgins Scholarship fund.
Scholarships will be given annually, said her husband, Joe Higgins, director of the Recreation Department. "There is no set amount as a goal, but we will give a $1,000 minimum each year."
The family also hopes to make the scholarship fund-raiser an annual event.
Higgins, who was a special education teacher in the Billerica school system for 30 years, died in November after a battle with a form of cancer known as mesothelioma.
"She dedicated her life to helping people," Higgins said, "We want this to go to a special needs student first and foremost who wants to go to college, or who wants to be a special needs teacher."
Applicants will be chosen who are special needs students who will attend college after high school.
But if no applicants meet this qualification, the scholarship will be given to students who intends to become a special needs teacher after college, or, if there are no applicants meeting this qualification, students who intend to become a teacher after college.
After Kathi's death, many mourners gave money in her name to the Billerica Scholarship Foundation.
In addition to helping the foundation, Higgins said the family decided to set up a separate scholarship fund aimed specifically at promoting special education. The Higgins scholarship fund will be overseen by a board of directors that includes members of both the Glavin and Higgins families.
